The Shipping News by Annie Proulx
3.0
emotional hopeful inspiring reflective sad medium-paced
Strong character development: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes

The story tells about the realities of one man’s life who was looked down upon by his closest family and society and his journey of finding his worth and right place in the world in the place of his true origins.

The life of Newfoundlanders were vividly shown in this story—the hardships caused by the weather, the cruelty of the sea, lives lost, old histories and how people get by with what they have.

Quoyle was thrust into this new life but he slowly finds his place amongst them over the course of the story. He learns more about himself and the people around them.

I was proud of him when he was first praised for his shipping news. And I was prouder when he became managing editor and do the job well. He finally found his niche.

He overcame his fears of the water and found joy in riding a boat and found true love for the second time.

He continues his life in Newfoundland and will never go back to the US again.
