The Children's Book by A.S. Byatt
3.0

I found it quite disappointing indeed - I expected more since Possession was wonderful. I kept getting the weird feeling that this was Byatt’s answer to Harry Potter. When I looked it up, I discovered that in fact Byatt had a deeply spiteful and ridiculous article about Harry Potter books and readers several years before this book came out. On direct comparison, this book falls laughably short - so I will not bother with a comparison. To assess it on its own merits it feels like a late 19th century history lesson with a series of characters added in to make certain historical points. The characters were not particularly compelling, though I did enjoy some of the discussions of ceramics and puppet theater. Further, it was quite weak in the plot department.
