The Charm Offensive
by Alison Cochrun
this book had a lot wrong with it, one of the only things i did like was the concept, and sometimes charlie.
when you’re writing a book that centers the characters mental health, it’s important to understand that there is always opposing forces. i have struggled immensely with my own mental health, and am incredibly aware how my actions affect others.dev fleeing and ghosting everyone in his life is a common occurrence when someone is deep in a mental health crisis, but dev only meekly tries to apologize once, there’s no making up that he just completely stopped speaking to everyone, even in the end charlie mentions that he never wants to speak to dev again because he relentlessly called him and never even heard that dev was SAFE.
beyond this aspect that frustrated me to no end, another thing that annoyed me was the fact that neither character ever seemed to be on the same page despite communicating multiple times.dev was convinced charlie didn’t like him like that and charlie was convinced he knew. but the thing was they both ADMITTED IT . very annoying.
i do like the ocd rep, and beyond the aforementioned issues, i think the mental health was accurately portrayed, and for the most part, handled well.
