The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe

tense medium-paced

3.75

So the problem with Poe is that he uses too many words where he shouldn't, and he doesn't know how to convey in a paper human experiences. He has amazing and terrible imagination for horror and he's amazing at describing it. But he should have left human feelings, thoughts and experiences of inner lives alone. It's not for him. His descriptions of it are so out of sinc with what a person could actually describe feeling that it just destroys all atmosphere, until his horror and action brings it back up.
