War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
4.0

A five star masterwork....except for finishing with an essay about the absurdity of recorded history. Tolstoy doesn't separate characters into good v bad so rather than a tidy ending he wraps this megastory up with with his own digressions. They are peppered throughout the book, a great one on bees, another about ants, all well worth reading, but after 600k words of such deep immersion, we deserve a proper fiction ending. Flipping into nonfiction, no matter how thoughtful sunk my excitement a bit.

The book tells the story of a handful of Russian families in the early 1800's, largely through the lens of the Napoleonic War. War and Peace is long, but never sluggish. It whips right along with incredible authenticity. Tolstoy tells a moving story and teaches us at the same time - historical fiction at its greatest. Even when he breaks off into short essays/analogies they are clearly composed and well timed.

Marathon not a sprint warning: at hundred pages a day, this book demands two weeks, maybe fifty a day and give yourself over to it for a month - and you should. It is one of the finest examples of edutainment in the history of literature. You will gain an immense respect for the writing, forge friends and enemies and become an expert in early 19th century European relations.

I loved the story and forever will reflect on what the characters

were going to do next. I assume the avalanche of emotions, namely longing, we are left with is the exact imprint the author intended.
