The Haunting of Ashburn House
by Darcy Coates
Despite several flaws that might bother me more in another genre, this book was surprisingly good. It was a bit slow to start with, and I was literally screaming at the character to make different life choices, but all in all this was a fun book to read.
The author did an excellent job of describing sounds, the house, and setting up the vibe and atmosphere. There was a moment in the book where my jaw literally dropped, I was so surprised at the directing the book went. This isn’t a typical haunted house book, so go into in with an open mind.
One of the biggest flaws was character development. Adrian was a completely blank slate. There was so much down time for the first 1/2 of the book that could have been peppered with flashbacks from her life that could give us a better sense of who she is as a person. All we know by the end of the book is all her family is dead, and she loves her cat Wolfgang, and also she considers random people her own age ‘friends’ after having met them once…
This is a fun atmospheric book to be read in October only, at night, in the dark, when you are alone. That way you set yourself up for the most enjoyable reading experience.
