The Private World of Georgette Heyer
by Jane Aiken Hodge
Fascinating how GH calls herself anti-romantic and yet wrote some of the most romantic stories ever. She practically built the regency romance genre. The language in her stories are unique and i began to understood why they sound that way.
But even if English isn't my first language and did struggle with reading some passages, some things shine through in GH's novels: the couples share laughter, they go through adversities and challenges together, "they actually talk to each other and they plan to spend the rest of their lives developing their relationship." For all the fancies and frivolities of the regency period, her characters are grounded in reality, some even defy the typical hero and heroine archetypes.
Though she made fun of herself as a romance novelist, I truly am grateful that she wrote what she wrote and can make one dream
