The Female of the Species
by Mindy McGinnis
Wow. I thought this was going be a bit of an contemporary assassin gimmick, where the teenage girl takes revenge on the boys in her school for sexually assaulting women.
But it was so complex, the characters so fleshed out. I didn’t think I would love Alex as much as I did. I loved all the main characters, even Jack was complex. I felt like it really reflected being a teenager, dramatic and full of alcohol and relationships.
But what I liked most was it’s discussion of rape culture, how Alex called out the other girls for criticising Branley for being typically hot and using her body to get men. Alex didn’t put up with any of that shit, even though it could have been stronger, and I didn’t like the way jack kept wanting Branley to be “the other Branley” eg wearing jeans, no makeup, in the mud, which was a bit judgemental honestly.
The friendship of Claire and Alex was the highlight, there was so much growth in such a short book. Recommend. Bloody, brutal, and fantastic.
