As someone very likely on both the autistic and asexual spectrums, I find most contemporary romance books somewhere between baffling and aggressively alienating, coming away bored, frustrated, and with the pervasive feeling that something is wrong with me. When I learned this was an #ownvoices romance with an autistic female protagonist, I decided to give it a shot. It was a big improvement, but definitely also clarified for me that my disconnect with normative sexuality is not just a neurodivergence thing. I felt the characters were better developed than most, though there were definitely some themes the novel seemed interested in exploring where it seemed confined by genre conventions. Overall, this is a very important book, and I’m glad it exists.
