Fruits Basket, Vol. 1 by Natsuki Takaya

3.0

Tohru Honda is an orphan when she stumbles upon the home of the Sohma family. When the family discovers she has been living in a tent on their property, the Sohmas invite her to stay with them. However, they’re no normal family. As they let Tohru in on their secret she realizes that life will never be the same again.

This series is light-hearted and highly entertaining. Not all of the cultural references immediately make sense, but manga is a great introduction to East Asian traditions. By learning about the members of the Sohma family readers become aware of the Chinese zodiac. Each volume ends with history and explanation of the zodiac, supplementing the information described within the story.
