There's a lot to unpack in this story, but it's the sort of story where I'm content to know that without doing the unpacking. It's a lot of fun to read, and the art matches the tone perfectly. The characters are interesting and mesh together in interesting ways.

As time goes on the tone shifts pretty drastically. While much of the book is goofy fun, the back half gets increasingly tense and dark. The ending is a bit bittersweet for a story that started out as sweet as candy. And to some extent this is the point—hiding who we are to fit in, never really knowing another person or how they see us—but it left me a bit less excited than the beginning did nonetheless.

Still, fantastic read for all ages, definitely not merely a kids book.
