Moshfegh does depravity, self loathing and what makes humanity just the absolute worst so, so well. This may be a controversial opinion but I think she’s at her best in a short story. The chances of it all veering in to the gross or disgusting for no real reason is still there but is way more subtle than when she is in a longer format.
