kitnotmarlowe 's review for:
The Enigma Game
by Elizabeth Wein
bumping this up to a proper 4 star because even though the writing wasn't as good as CNV i have thought of absolutely nothing but the last quarter for 24 hours also elizabeth wein i will read a 200k romance novel about ignacy and derfel. i would finance it myself if you're ever wondering who the target audience is for that. anygay, a numbered list!
1. i liked all the characters! with such a big cast, a few voices got muddled and lost, but jamie, ellen, and louisa were all dynamic. great kids, the lot of 'em!
2. if i want the rewards of my historical background gaydar being right about ignacy and derfel i must submit to the upsetting ordeal of all of 648 squadron getting killed
3. on a similar gay note: strange that ellen and julie are in the same place for a while and not once does ellen even remember that they had a Summer Romance. did elizabeth wein forget the whole plot of the pearl thief?
4. wish there'd been more codebreaking bletchley park-style because a lot of the story was rather stagnant
5. the dead men's money falling out of the mantle........ feels BAD scoob!!
6. something about jane felt underdeveloped....her backstory? her motivations? her mental health? maybe a combination of all three, because there was something that wasn't entirely working
7. right before part 2 starts there's a (truthfully, anticlimactic) scene that keeps flipping between ellen and louisa's povs. I'm talking a page or two at most. not only was this super jarring, but it very easily could have been strictly louisa's or strictly ellen's pov. there were a few other cases of very short oscilating chapters and every time my brain was like "what is this, a ruta sepetys novel?" (haha, zing!)
8. once more for the cheap seats: the honorable james gordon erskine murray beaufort-stuart is a trans l e g e n d. i'm putting my grubby lil trans hands on him. he's mine now.
