The Book of Lost Things
by John Connolly
"Some of the tales were unfamiliar to him while still retaining echoes of the tales he knew almost by heart." Yes. This was my favorite aspect of the book. Connolly has a real knack for (re)telling fairy tales that makes them both familiar and unfamiliar, not necessarily easy to predict, yet still true to the fairy-tale spirit. Reminded me a lot of A Tale Dark And Grimm (which it predates by several years).
