Hippie
by Paulo Coelho
Open Hippie by Paulo Coelho and launch yourself back into 1969 and experience some nostalgia! I say this even though I wasn’t alive in 1969 but that’s how great of a writer Coelho is. His ability to transport you into another time and experience the atmosphere of that time is an unparalleled talent.
This book was a little different than his others, it definitely seeped autobiographical components and made it that much more real to the reader. I loved the plot and how well it moved throughout his experiences. It was really wonderful to learn about the author through this work of fiction as it is based on his real life. His books never disappoint!
My favourite passage was his view on what a “hippie” is…
“So, we know that it’s a movement without prejudices, based on drugs, music, huge open- air concerts where anything goes, travel, absolute and total disregard for those who are fighting at the moment for an ideal, a free, a more just society, those trying to liberate the oppressed, denounce injustice, take part in the essential class struggle, in which people give their blood and their lives so that the only hope for humanity, socialism, might no longer be mere utopia and instead become a reality.”
I always say to my friends that I was born in the wrong generation. This totally confirms it. Grab a copy of Hippie and get a glimpse into the life of the man behind The Alchemist.
