The unusual narrative style of this book is both it’s strength and weakness.
By showing the lives of multiple generations woven together over 100 years, themes around the circular nature of time and universal human experiences are beautifully portrayed. This is therefore a book that causes a lot of reflection and offers many themes to explore, which is probably why this won a Nobel Prize.
The other side of the coin, however, is that the repetition and number of characters necessary to get the point across can in places result in a tedious reading experience where it’s hard to stay emotionally invested in the book.
