The Lies of Locke Lamora combines everything I personally love in my fantasy books. It has memorable characters, solid world-building, witty dialogue, and real stakes. Honestly this is more of a 4 1/2 star, but good reads don’t have half stars.
The only thing keeping me from rating this 5 stars is, that some scenes felt a bit drawn out. This book wasn’t really that long, but it felt long because the few scenes that I did find boring, happened to be kinda long winded. Particularly that scene where Locke is trying to convince those guys to give him their clothes. Though it was funny, that scene went on forever.
Scott Lynch does a great job of making you love these characters, then absolutely tormenting them. I love it. It felt like no one was safe. No joke, Locke got his ass beat at least 3 times. I’m such a sucker for lovable scoundrel characters, and Locke Lamora had me. I loved him, Jean, and their little found family.
The action was also so gripping and well done. There was not a ton of fight scenes in this story, but the ones it did have were awesome. I could clearly visualize every brutal thing that happened, and I loved it. Vivid imagery matters so much to me when I read, and this book ticked that box. I definitely wasn’t expecting so many sharks though, that’s for sure.
This book is great for people looking to dip into grim dark fantasy. It’s does have a darker gritty side, while also maintaining a level of humor and whimsy. If you like a character driven narrative, interesting world building, and don’t mind graphic violence, you should read The Lies of Locke Lamora.
