The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

5.0

My one complaint about this book is, with it being standalone, that there is not another book for me to dive straight into.

This is one of the most beautifully crafted fantasy books - perhaps even one of the most beautifully crafted books - I have had the privilege of reading. I'm not sure I can adequately put into words my love for this story, but I will try.

The lore was richly entwined in the story and characters and the world-building was detailed; the settings were stunningly described, and I felt carried on a journey throughout the lands of Inys, Lasia, Metendon, Ersyr, Yscalin, Seiiki, and the Empire of the Twelve Lakes. The characters themselves were meticulously crafted; I often found myself wishing to reach out to offer them comfort, strength, and courage as they faced the dangers of their world. I wept with them, laughed with them, feared for them in a way I have only with the beloved series of my childhood and, in my adulthood, The Song of Achilles.

Although this is the longest single book I have ever read, I never once felt the story was longwinded or awkward; the pacing was balanced throughout and the perspectives provided by the four different narrators, coming from vastly different backgrounds, ensured this.

Thank you, Samantha Shannon, for sharing this beautiful work.
