A Mark on My Soul by Jordon Greene

No. Fuck that ending. I did not sign up for this.

Okay. Having sat with it for a few days my gut reaction may have been harsher than needed. I still cannot and will not excuse the ending. I stand by my feelings on how horrible the ending is. It happens quickly, without much warning and is at odds with much of the rest of the book.

How Parker (and most of the cast to be frank) are written prior to his su*c*de is at odds with the actual event/after events happening which is so sad given how good the character portrayal was up to that point. They felt like real people and what happens doesn't make sense with their character development. It all happens way too quickly as well, with no breathing room where it feels like it was only there to be shocking.

Not to mention how poorly the talk between the dad and Noah was with the letter. I wanted to scream at Noah's dad for his audacity. His parents turn from sweet, caring parents to props in the background with ideas and views that make little sense given what we know about them. It felt rushed and was poorly done. IF it had been a bungled su*c*de attempt Parker survived as a 'wake up call' to the parents I'd have overlooked and forgiven how bad it was done.

Then there are Noah's parents. Are you telling me that, knowing what they know, they would have never thought to reach out to Parker prior to this. Wouldn't have spoken or tried to comfort their son whose partner is clearly hurting? None of that seems to be happening. No talking to the other family or anything either. Just minding their own business like nothing is happening. Like that is so unrealistic it makes me mad.

Also the 'mention of su*c*de warning in the beginning of the book is so underselling it is almost insulting. As someone who has attempted in the past it was a slap in the face so maybe I'm just a bit sensitive to it but I can never recommend this, especially now seeing Noah is basically not in any of the others in the series (save like 2 pages in one). F*ck all the way off.
