Chosen by Ted Dekker

3.0

When the age restriction for the Forest Guard, an elite army of warriors sworn to defend Eleon’s people, is moved from 18 to 16, Johnis, Silvie, Billos and Darsal are among the new recruits. Their first mission as a team: to bring four catalina cacti back from the edge of the desert, home to their forest; destroying the enemy, should any of the Horde cross their path. This one “simple” task becomes complicated when Johnis, a chosen one, is made aware of a true quest that he and his friends were destined to die for: recovering the seven lost books from the force behind the corrupted Horde: Teeleh, a monstrous, bat-like creature with vile breath and torturous tendencies.

Chosen is the first of a series (The Lost Books) that supplement Dekker’s other other-worldly novels: Black, Red, and White. They stand well on their own as well. Dekker’s writing style is very fast-paced and gripping, like a movie in your head, but still manages to remain centered on an involved plot and an awesome allegory. Dekker is one of my favorite authors, but I am still trying to get through all of his works. This was my first time reading this particular novel.
