Things I Wanted to Say, But Never Did
by Monica Murphy
REVIEW POST - Book 41 of 2024
Things I Wanted To Say by Monica Murphy
I read A Million Kisses In Your Lifetime last year and loved it so wanted to dive in to the rest of the Lancaster Prep series.
Going back to the first installment for this one, I wasn't sure what to expect. It was my first real bully romance read, a little darker than my usual reads. We got a glimpse of the bully vibe in Million Kisses but it felt more like enemies to lovers for them.
This one really hits with the bully trope. It's written so well. You're not supposed to like the way that Whit treats Summer. They both have their issues, having grown up with things that changed their lives at an impressionable age.
The development of the characters at such a crucial coming of age stage in their life is well done. I feel like a lot of people tend to have strong opinions on this book because of how Whit treats Summer. It's a bully romance. It's not meant to be hearts and flowers. He's not nice to her. For very specific reasons. And she takes it. For very specific reasons. Their relationship is dark and twisty and they are a little toxic for each other whilst finding comfort in each other's demons and darkest desires. They're also young, and don't always know the most mature way to deal with those emotions.
I really enjoyed the long break in the timeline near the end of this book. Whit was SUCH an interesting character and I cannot wait to read more of the Lancaster and meet Monica later this month!
