I Was A Doctor In Auschwitz by Gisella Perl

challenging dark informative reflective sad medium-paced

5.0

Incredible memoir written not long after WWII ended, detailing a Jewish OBGYN’s experience prior to, during, and after the Holocaust. Details her experience of the evils perpetrated by the SS officers and by Mengele. As a doctor within the camps, she was forced to make traumatic ethical decisions in order to save as many lives as possible from the Nazis.
Her reflections on her life afterwards and on the Allies that came to the camps after liberation make the book much more than a graphic description of the horrors she and others endured. She emphasizes that there is hope even after all the evil.
