Banishing the Bogwitch by William Stafford
Did not finish book. Stopped at 61%.
"Jenna was "woke" enough to know you shouldn't assume a person's gender, even if they have been dead for centuries and they invariably conformed to expectations back then. Jenna realised she was looking forward to her sociology course. There you could be as judgmental as you liked".
What kind of rubbish is this? There were a few lines like this earlier in the book too, also in relation to Jenna (one of the main characters, about to start college), which just left me with an unpleasant feeling that the author doesn't really like or understand young people. So why make a young person the protagonist whom we're supposed to be cheering on through an adventure?!
Also, people didn't "invariably conform to [gender] expectations" at any point in history. :sigh:
