What I Should've Said by Max Monroe

challenging emotional sad slow-paced
Okay, so I think this story has so much potential. It deals with some very heavy topics, and the characters are so interesting. Both Bennett and Norah are dealing with some heavy life circumstances. Norah is trying to figure out who she is without her mother's influence. Bennett is just trying to take care of his terminally ill daughter. They definitely have chemistry, but the other stuff is pretty heavy. This is a slow burn, but very emotional. Some of my reader friends have really loved this book, and I think if you like the sound of everything above you should definitely check it out.

Now for a little bit of what made me pause and then skim the second half of the book. This is all about personal preference and may not bother others! Kind of a spoiler, so don't keep reading and say I didn't warn you. By the halfway point of the book, Norah--who supposedly has always been easily influenced/controlled and was living the life her mother wanted--has slapped Bennett for being a grumpy jerk 4 times. Like what?! First of all just because you're a woman, doesn't mean it's okay for you to physically harm someone who is being rude. Honestly, I couldn't get past this. It was just kind of toxic and not a good look. That paired with the use of "macho" to describe Bennett and a few other antiquated descriptors just had me losing interest. This may seem totally silly to some people, which is why I wouldn't say it's not a good book. It just wasn't a book for me. We all have our things we don't like. If you want to read this author duo, I always recommend Single Dad Seeks Juliet!! I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
