Frankenstein Paperback by Mary Shelley

4.0

I'm quite surprised with how much I liked this book. I didn't know much about this book before, just imagined a ruthless monster created by a man but the story is so complex. Firstly, I love Shelley's writing - I usually shy away from classics because the language isn't always the easiest but I found her writing to be very readable. Even though it's very dramatic at some points but I guess that reflects the expressions of the time.

The story made me sad for the monster - the sentient being created with blind ambition and immediately spurned for its deformity. I had mixed feelings for the scientist, with me sometimes feeling really sorry for all his losses but I couldn't help but think that he's to blame for his misfortunes. Did he finally repent or did he deserve a different ending?

One of the great things about reading such a book is that I can read all the stories that this book has inspired, and really be able to draw references from the source material. I wasn't expecting so much death and sadness in it, but this is why it drew so much to the story.
