Trouble With the Cursed by Kim Harrison
4.25
Crap on toast, there was a lot of smut in this book! No, not that kind. Not sure which book this was explained in, but it appears that “smut” in this world refers to the negative energy that lingers after you’re done using some kind of magic. It took me a while to understand that Rachel continuously saying that she was covered in smut didn’t mean what it sounded like, lol. And I almost lost it when she said this to another character: “He will dump on you all the smut he generates and, Steph, it can be a lot.”
This was my third book in the Hollows and it’s becoming clear to me that hopping around like this isn’t going to work. There are so many things that the author just assumes you’ll know at this point, and it makes it hard to follow if you haven’t read all the earlier books. Damn it all to the turn—this is gonna take forever!
But I think it will be worth it because, despite being confused on numerous occasions, I really enjoyed this book. The camaraderie between Rachel and her circle of friends is beautiful, and I love the passion and conviction in her character. Also, the action sequences are very well-written and I felt caught up in the drama even if I couldn’t quite visualize it. Maybe I’ll circle back to this book after reading the earlier ones, and I’ll understand the stakes a lot better. But regardless it was a solid read.
