The Picture of Dorian Gray
by Oscar Wilde
I did a tandem read of The Picture of Dorian Gray and the uncensored version. I have detailed notes comparing the two that I might share later, but the short of it is, the uncensored version is better. Its delivery is less diluted and the additional text in the censored version while at times, very well written, does not outweigh the true version and clearer message. The additional text is nothing to be missed in my personal opinion. I also think that Wilde’s real intent of his art is best seen in his uncensored version and to me at least, his attempt to divert the themes for his own personal safety is obvious in the 1891 text. But whether you read either version, Oscar Wilde was an extremely talented author and I loved reading this.
