Things Fall Apart
by Chinua Achebe
I thought the writing in this book was interesting, with the story unfolding like a fable. But I walked away having taken little emotional or intellectual interest in the story or its characters. Even the main character, Okonkwo, was presented without much complexity beyond his propensity to beat his wives and his ability to cultivate yams. I do get that in the end, the book as a whole is meant as a treatise about the effects of colonialism on Africa, it just didn’t seem to do a very good job of it.
