Heart of the Sun by Mia Sheridan
3.0

This is not a romance.

That needs to be stated as it's marketed as "enemies to lovers" and "second chance romance". While yes, those two things do occur, they do so in a way that sits this firmly in women's fiction.

Frankly, I found it to be disjointed, almost as though Sheridan kept reminding herself it's meant to be a romance and threw a couple paragraphs in to satisfy the requirements. The entirety of this book follows our protagonists through a trek across America during near world-ending circumstances. It's largely reflects on the worst of society and personal growth. And not in a hot, romancey way.

Perhaps this outcome is to be expected given this book wasn't even her idea. Yes, you read that correctly. The first line in the acknowledgements makes it clear the whole idea came from the same production company that gave us the Twilight's films and, most recently, Clown in a Cornfield.

I didn't not enjoy myself. This certainly wasn't a waste of time to read, but I do feel like anyone picking it up—steadfast in their desire to read a romance—will be disappointed.
