A History of Wild Places by Shea Ernshaw

5.0

When people go desperate to find their missing loved one, they call Travis Wren who has an uncanny ability to find them through touching objects. This was the case for Maggie St. James. His journey leads him to a place which people believed was real only as a legend. But when Travis finds it, he too disappears.

The novel shifts then to be told in short vignettes by Theo, Calla, and Bee who are three members of the Pastoral community. As items unravel and memory shifts, this haunting beautiful magical realism tale with a heavy dash of mystery pulls you in. What will Theo, Calla, and Bee remember? And what will they decide when they do?

Once I got into the lives of those in Pastoral, I just couldn't stop reading. The simplicity of their lives but also the underlying threat hooked me. The ending questions what our humanity and our relationships amount to in an eerie way.
