iffer 's review for:
The Book Eaters
by Sunyi Dean
Ugh my review got eaten so I'll just leave this quote from the book:
"We can only live by the light we're given, and some of us are given no light at all. What else can we do except learn to see in the dark?"
A few more thoughts:
The author puts a new twist on the vampire genre, portraying the "small apocalypses" of Devon and her son, simultaneously critiquing systems of oppression. She also possibly obliquely criticizes AI by questioning what intelligence is in a species that can instantly absorb information; why creativity is required; and how passive consumption maintains the status quo.
I also couldn't help thinking of the James Baldwin quote, "The children are always ours, every single one of them, all over the globe" while reading this. Intentional severance of the parent-child bond is at the heart of the Book Eater society, and it is a mother's love for her children that shakes her out of her compliance and initiates a series of society-changing events.
