King Lear by William Shakespeare, Jonathan Bate, Eric Rasmussen
4.0

King Lear is a brutal, emotional dive into power, pride, and betrayal. Watching a king lose everything, his family, his mind, and his authority, makes for a tragic but fascinating story. The themes Shakespeare explores, like loyalty, ego, and the abuse of power, still feel incredibly relevant today.

I read along with the Ian McKellen version, since I think Shakespeare is best heard rather than read. Hearing the lines performed really helped the language come alive and made the emotions hit even harder.
