Latency by Chris Coppel
5.0
I will be the first to admit I have loved all the Chris Coppel’s novels I have read. So I will say I was a bit skeptical at the start thinking this may go away from the horror despite the blurb. I should not have feared though because Coppel delivers the horror if it is perhaps a little different to what I was expecting.
Despite my worries I have to say I would have enjoyed just a crime thriller since I loved our protagonists, Mason and Teri. They are far from perfect but I thought they worked well and I loved that about them. I also quickly came to love the pace and story. We learn with our main characters and as always Coppel leads us on a winding and twisting path before we find the truth.
The other thing I adore about Coppel’s novels to date is the realism. While his stories may include supernatural and uncanny the settings are so real. We get detailed descriptions of the locations and cities so much so it feels like you are there with them.
If you enjoy police procedurals or supernatural stories you will devour this one. It is also the perfect starting point if you have always read police procedurals but want to delve into horror or vice versa. Another hit and I cannot wait to read my next Coppel.
