Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige

3.0

I don't really have the attention span (since it's almost six in the morning) to write a real review of this book. So, here's the short version.

Amy irritated me. I hate that some authors think anger equals strength, especially in female protagonists. Why in the world would a bitter, cruel person be stronger than someone who has compassion and love? God, Amy's moments of sympathy for others really did not make up for the attitude she had.

I also felt really confused a lot of the time. I mean, I understood the gist of the story, but really, OZ was so different in this story that I felt like the themes - Dorothy, the yellow brick road, etc. - were really just a shell for a completely different story. I'm not sure the story really had to be about Dorothy at all. She could have just as easily made up an entirely different world. Oz was so completely different than the original that it barely resembled Oz at all. I know that was part of the point, but it wasn't really worth all the work it must have taken to make the stories line up. I have a feeling that what I'm trying to say could have been said in fewer words, but it's early/late.

I really didn't feel a connection to any character in the story except Pete - and the revelation at the end really disappointed me. I was kind of hoping Pete was...more than...well, anyway. I don't want to give anything away. I'm hoping that Amy grows up a little by the next book - which I will read, despite my mild disappointment with this book.

Anyway, my main warning to anyone planning to read this book is to be prepared for some gorey descriptions. I'm usually pretty good at dealing with gross stuff (I have watched a lot of Dexter, for example), but some of the descriptions in this book were especially horrible, so be prepared. And also, be prepared to absolutely hate Dorothy by the end of this book. You'll never want to watch the Wizard of Oz again, just FYI.
