A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn
4.0

I would prefer to give this a 3.5 rather than a 4 but that's not an option, so I rounded up.

First, I enjoyed the story. The main character has a strong voice and she's not afraid to use it. She's also smart throughout the whole book, not just smart until we need an inciting incident.

However, a lot of the scenes are repetitive and I found myself nodding off. I didn't feel as attached to Stoker. He started the story a mystery and there was very little given about his character. I don't want to spend the next 4 books with my handout for every little crumb about him.

The way the relationship unfolded between Veronica and Stoker was believable and rational. There is attraction but it's not the all-consuming romance novel variety.

The story is good and well-written. Worth my moving on to book 2.
