Learned Optimism: How to Change Your Mind and Your Life
by Martin Seligman
Disclaimer: The anecdotes, especially in regards to gender roles/expectations are pretty dated.
Even reading this book gave me a better perspective on my life, let alone the exercises at the end of the book. While some elements are sorely dated, the core science of examining how your reaction to adversity affects your entire mood is still rock solid. I didn't realize how many of my beliefs were rooted in the muck of pessimism until I read examples of how ruminating on a perceived slight can use way too much of your time. My weekends are now better spent, and I'm working on understanding adversity at work better. 4 stars because, while all of this is great, he does try to promote a very Western, God-centric view of life at the end. A lot of the conclusions are well supported, but believing in (singular) God and having a large family are not the only ways to stave off an inflated sense of self.
Either way, thank you, Dr. Seligman!
