"“All creatures know love, Dad used to say. All creatures.”

Wow. There was so much in this story, some of it really good, and some of it just too much for me to truly enjoy the reading experience. It is without a doubt exceptional writing as I expect from anything that McConaghy. Her writing is gripping and evocative and pulls you in despite the topics that she shines a light on.

Inti and Aggie are twins who were raised by polar opposite parents and who spent most of their childhood and adolescence in the wild with their father. The story is told from Inti's perspective, who has a condition where she feels the pain of any creature she is looking at. She is helping to restore wolves to a dying ecosystem, while meeting resistance from the people of the area. Some events unfold that cause death and pain to some of the characters.

There is so much darkness in this story and a lot of violence against women which was the part that made it the most difficult for me to truly enjoy the story. I understand why McConaghy made the decisions she did, they worked for the story but it was not an easy task to read it.
