labunnywtf 's review for:

The Devil's Prayer by Luke Gracias
4.0

Here's the thing. This review is...incomplete.

This book is intensely compelling. It's the absolute perfect book for anyone who has ever dreamed of enacting the worst forms of revenge on someone who has wronged them. If you've ever fantasized about enacting severe, corporal punishment on someone, dear lord, this one is for you.

I agree with the reviews and blurbs I read that compare this story to The Davinci Code. But it's a very light version. I couldn't get into TDC, I enjoyed it but it got a little too deep into mythology for me. This book dips its toes in, but you never feel like you've gone under too far.

The character of Denise is absolutely fantastic and well written. She's the main character. Which is hard to tell sometimes, because I think Siobhan is supposed to be the main character? But she gets a handful of activity, and a lot of suspense is put on her shoulders. Undo suspense. She really doesn't do anything here.

Here's the trouble with this book. As the first part of a series, this book is pretty freaking fantastic. But I see no evidence of this becoming a series. And that means this book set up a huge mythological battle, and then...ended. Nothing is tied up in the end.

Which is why this review is incomplete. Maybe there are more books planned, and if so, this is a FANTASTIC starter book.

But if this is it? This is an extremely frustrating and dissatisfying book.

Gotta tell you, I am severely conflicted.

Edit: After this review was posted, the author reached out to let me know that there is, indeed, a sequel coming, quite soon. Therefore, I am bumping this review up to 4 stars, and genuinely looking forward to the continuation of the story.
