Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead

5.0

This emotional story spans generations and follows a cast of characters as they are transformed by the world around them. I connected strongly with the past narrative focused on Marian, but Hadley's present-time story was fascinating to follow and highlighted some themes of the book. Both were wonderfully crafted and I loved piecing together the story from one timeline to the other.

Bullet review:
- Dual timelines
- Family saga
- Flawed characters
- Drive and passion
- Untold stories
- Beautiful and epic
- Twin relationship

The main focus of the story is Marian's passion for aviation, and the intensity of this calling was perfectly captured on the page. I, of course, loved the relationship between Marian and her brother. But, by following generations, the author was also able to subtly showcase how family history shapes descendants.
Bonus points: LGBTQ characters
TW: WW2, death of family members, marital rape, sexual abuse...
