This was one of my most anticipated releases this year. Aside from the release fiasco aside, this book was a let down following up how well book 1 was. It took me this long to read her sequel bc quite literally I had a hard time getting through it.

The entire first half of the book had incredibly slow pacing, but also felt like no progression of plot or romance at all? Like if anything it was just a super slow intro of new characters in the first part of the book and a lot of going back and forth traveling. I felt like nothing exciting happened until the latter 75%+ of the book. And then when it picked up, the speed went from 0-150%.

On the aspect of the “romance”, the only thing I truly liked was the realistic manner of the development of their relationship. I hate books that go from true hate to insta love and thankfully it had none of that. Their romance is true slow burn, which I love, but there was very minimal spice (I think literally 2 scenes written) in this book. With how obsessive Soren is in his thoughts of Rooke, I kind of expected more during the actual spice scenes. It’s fine that it’s not a focus of this series but if all this tension was built up to nothing truly explosive? Pretty disappointing when you reach that anticipated climax of it.

In true J Bree manner, her cliffhanger makes me want to read book 3 ASAP but I hope that the flow of plot line and world building can be much better fleshed out in the finale of this trilogy.
