Wolfhunter River by Rachel Caine

Wolfhunter River is the third book in the Stillhouse Lake series. I finished the first two books feeling satisfied, and confused that there was going to be a third book. It seemed Gwen’s story had reached its conclusion and I felt there was no reason to return to the series.
Wolfhunter River sets us back into Gwen Proctor’s life, where she continues to face harassment. It makes sense that the events of the second book wouldn’t fix everything. But I allowed myself to hope that after the end of the second book everything would be somewhat okay. Wolfhunter River brings us into a new conflict after Gwen receives a mysterious phone call that set us on new adventures. Through all this Gwen and her family continue to face the harassment they did in the first two books. While I do concede there is some realism to this, it has worn thin on me. I wish it was not such a prominent part of the story. I love reading about Gwen, Lanny, Connor and Sam. These characters brought me back to this world with a sense of excitement I don’t usually feel for series. I wish that the story got started a lot faster.
I had a good time reading once we got to Wolfhunter River, but the book didn’t manage to grip me until the final third. Which unfortunately was too little too late. I felt that the book opened with such a strong prologue, except the plot relevant to the prologue isn’t in the forefront of this book at all.
Even though this book is my least favourite in the series (and I still think it could have stayed a duology) I do look forward to reading Rachel Caine’s next entry. This book does a good job of setting up where we will go from here.
