amandagstevens 's review for:
The stated target audience of this book is Black mothers, and here I am neither Black nor a mother, but I'm glad I read it. It is an accessible compilation of history through the eyes of historical characters not often featured--and who therefore are more difficult to know than their famous sons. It is also a passionate tribute to them, and in its final chapter becomes a persuasive essay on how the injustices these three mothers battled still have not been vanquished.
It's a worthwhile read, but it feels like almost too much book for its slimness. I'm sure this slimness is partly the result of, as the author acknowledges, our lack of documented information about these women. But tackling the life stories of three people along with the author's deeply personal conclusion and calls to action--it's a lot for just over 250 pages, and occasionally the book feels both "too much" (breadth) and "not enough" (detail/depth).
That said, though... This book made me think and feel, and I'm so glad the author has compiled what information does exist on Alberta King, Berdis Baldwin, and Louise Little. They deserve their legacies to live on--not only in that of their remarkable sons but in themselves, for themselves.
