Demigods & Magicians: Percy and Annabeth Meet the Kanes by Rick Riordan

4.0

Since I finished The Kane Chronicles, I could finally read this! It’s a Percy, Annabeth and the Kanes crossover book with three short stories. And I’ll be honest, reading this book was half my incentive for finishing The Kane Chronicles. And all three stories were great. The first was the shortest and from Carter’s POV. It had Percy and Carter as they fought a giant crocodile monster. Their meeting very fun and I loved seeing Percy again. Wish it’d been longer.

The second story was the longest with Annabeth and Sadie. It was thankfully from Annabeth’s POV (Sadie grates on me sometimes). It was a good story and I love Annabeth. It also delved more into what was really going on, whereas the first story had just been a brief intro. Turns out these aren’t just random shorts but are actually connected. Loved that. I also loved, and was surprised to learn, that the big bad of the book has both Greek and Egyptian involvement. I also liked that the book tied up what would have been a loose thread from The Serpent’s Shadow.

The final story was the conclusion and from Percy’s perspective! I was so happy because I’ve missed Percy and his voice. The story itself was really good but honestly, the whole book would’ve been worth it just to see Percy and Annabeth again.

One thing I didn’t appreciate was the book trying to make Percy and Sadie seem the same just because they’re both sassy. There are so many reasons why that’s wrong but I don’t want to get into them too much because that’ll just come off as me insulting Sadie. I don’t hate her, she’s just… not my favourite. But I will say that while Percy, like Sadie, isn’t big on doing research, he doesn’t mock people for it. In fact, he’s not really the mocking type, unless you’re a monster or you piss him off.

Overall, this was an entertaining, non-stressful, crossover that I really enjoyed. It was a pretty short read too, and fast paced. Would definitely recommend.
