Tension remains between ThunderClan and ShadowClan after their battle. StarClan goes to the medicine cats and tells them that the Clans must entirely separate from one another, even to the extent of the medicine cats breaking their unique bonds. Ivypaw finally realizes the true intentions of the Dark Forest cats, and she becomes a spy, continuing to go, but only to learn more about their sinister plans. This book seems like mostly setup for the following books of the arc, but it was still a very enjoyable read.

The chapters featuring Flametail are a nice change of pace. The scene where the ShadowClan cats play on the frozen lake is unique, and it's nice to get a glimpse into normal life within other Clans.

Spoiler

Flametail falls through the ice and is killed, which seems like a really unnecessary event, but it was nicely written.
