Velvet was the Night by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Wow I loved this book. I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did but I’m glad. I’m not that aware of Mexican history though I do have an understanding of the political issues and corruption that has been prevalent in the nation’s recent history. I found the Elvis storyline intriguing because of the personal and political ramifications for the character.

But for me, Maite was the star. She won me over. Maite isn’t even the kind of character I usually like—but there was something so appealing and endearing about her wistful, fanciful dreams of a perfect romance. The fact that she feels under appreciated and undesired but still tries to hang on to her silly romantic notions was beguiling. It was great to read a character who is a hot mess and knows it. Better still, Maite doesn’t have to change herself to be a hero—she’s so brave in the face of danger and keeps standing up to that awful El Mago. I loved that about her.

I loved the twist at the end and the fact Elvis decided to pursue Maite. I ended the book hoping she takes a chance on him and that he treats her right.

I can’t believe I fell in love with this book—but I totally did.
