The Return by Nicholas Sparks

2.0

As a Nicholas Sparks’ fan, I had high expectations for this book. In my opinion, this book misses that special magic that characterizes his stories, that kind of magic that makes the reader not only fall in love with the characters, but also feed the hope to one day find a love like that for oneself.

In all honesty, the first half of the book was incredibly slow and uneventful. My favorite part was Trevor describing how intricate and organized bee colonies are.
The second half picked up a bit, and was more easily readable, but I found myself waiting for the punchline.

I didn’t feel connected to any of the characters. Natalie didn’t share anything about herself until the very end, Callie was even less approachable and consistently mean, grampa could’ve had a longer backstory, I would’ve loved to hear more about the love story between Trevor’s grandparents.

TLDR: no tears were cried.
