Hereticus by Dan Abnett
2.0
While I absolutely loved book 1 and enjoyed book 2 quite a bit, I have to admit I only really "tolerated" a lot of book 3, Hereticus.
The major events of the book (which I won't spoil) sort of felt like they came out of nowhere and the repercussions really affected a lot of factors about the series that I had enjoyed in the previous books.
My biggest complaint, however, is how much time is devoted to the big final battle and wrap-up. This conflict is 3 books in the making, and yet I found myself with less than 20 pages to go and we STILL hadn't even reached the "big bad." What ended up happening was that the first 75% of the book felt like Abnett was spinning his wheels and then everything important in a book's worth of plot was crammed in during the last 100 pages or so.
It reminds me of the "Sanderson Avalanche" as any Brandon Sanderson fans will be familiar with, but honestly, there just wasn't enough payoff in this to justify the arduous buildup. It really left a bad taste in my mouth, which is particularly sad because of how much I loved the series up until this point.
