Unsheltered
by Barbara Kingsolver
Don’t we all crave shelter—from disaster, bad times, heartache...the weather? So, too, do Willa and Thatcher, the main characters of “Unsheltered” the latest fantastic book by Barbara Kingsolver. The two are separated by over a century in time, but live on the same block in a very unusual community. These are rational people who’ve followed the rules but who have somehow ended up in their present impoverished circumstances. They work hard, make do with what they’ve got and, most importantly, they make connections (emotional shelter) with people around them. These connections are so important for weathering the various disasters that befall them but also for navigating the social upheaval in the 1860s (when Darwin’s theories changed society) and the present (Trump fans may not love this book as it will probably cut pretty close to the bone.)
Extra credit for hilarious Greek swear words, a 19th century woman scientist and Darwin’s theory of natural selection being key to the plot.
