The Second Mrs. Astor
by Shana Abé
I have a terrible habit of pushing through to finish books that I should have DNF'd. This is one of those books.
This is a historical novel based on the brief relationship between John Jacob Astor IV and his child-bride, Madeleine Astor. This creepy rich dude 'falls in love' with a 17 year old child, also rich, but not AS RICH, and they get married. He dies on the Titanic. In between, there is a lot of heavy prose and romantic drivel about how fiercely this child loves her husband, who is old enough to be her father. He's just SO HANDSOME!
Mostly, this is a boring and uninspiring book. The actual Titanic parts were the most interesting, although sad, they were the only ones that didn't leave my eyes screaming. The author has nice prose and descriptions, but dear god, why would you write a book about an old rich dude who marries a CHILD!! Gross.
