The Waiting Game: The Untold Story of the Women Who Served the Tudor Queens by Nicola Clark

challenging dark emotional informative reflective sad tense medium-paced

4.0

A beautifully told slice of history from the margins. Clark does an excellent job creating portraits of these women from scraps, making the invisible visible without falling into the trap of too much surmising. It can be hard to follow all of the various names, and I do wish the book would have included an index of major players, family trees, and events (could I recall the details of the Exeter Conspiracy when it was brought up again later in the book? Absolutely not.) but all in all it’s an educational glimpse into the fraught and often tragic lives of female courtiers during an extremely dangerous, unstable, and unprecedented period in the history of England.
